Top 10 Advancements in Automotive History

Automotive technology has come a LONG way in the relatively short amount of time cars have roamed the earth. I mean, just put a Model T next to ANY new car at any dealership and it’ll have you scratching your head.

Here are RADD’s Top 10 advancements made in auto history.

1. Modern Radial Tire — Starting with #1, we have to go with Michelin’s development of the modern radial tire in 1946; a design we still use today. Trust me, go on a ride in any pre-war car and you’ll feel and hear the difference a radial tire makes over a bias ply tire.

2. Passenger Restraint Systems — We are going to bunch Seatbelts and Air Bags together, as they were introduced to the world just 2 years apart from each other. Ever since those days, consumers have been enjoying a MUCH safer driving experience.

3. Power Brakes — Invented in the 20’s it wasn’t until the 1990’s that power/hydraulic brakes became standard. If you’ve ever driven a car with manual brakes, I am sure you felt it in your leg the next day.

4. Power Steering — Making it’s entrance in 1951 with the new Chrysler Imperial, power steering changed the car market forever. Providing a substantially more comfortable and convenient driving experience, we will never see the days of manual steering again.

5. Air Conditioning — Although not necessary for the safety or performance of a car, I think we can all agree, life without AC would be unbearable.

6. Automatic Transmission — Though some still opt for it’s predecessor, including myself, the automatic transmission dominates the market today, and will likely continue to until we have flying cars (fingers crossed)

7. Electronic Fuel Injection — Proving to be far superior to prior methods, EFI introduced the world to a whole new level or efficiency.

8. Radio — Proving its importance, the car radio has been around almost as long as the car itself. Turns out drivers prefer not to sit in silence with their thoughts all the time.

9. Independent Suspension — Another early development in automotive engineering, independent suspension offered a considerably smoother ride than solid axles and leaf springs. Chances are the car you’re driving now has both IFS and IRS.

10. Electric and Autonomous Cars — Regardless of your stance on the new age of electric cars, it offers itself as a sign of just how far auto tech can and will go. It begs the question; What’s next?
